On Saturday, June 3, the sophomore students of Carmel Science Research competed at the Somers Science Fair: A 1st-Year Science Research Competition. This is the only science research competition of its kind in NY that provides the opportunity for first-year science research students to present their intended research design in a formal setting (along with sister fair, the Westlake Science Fair). Gretta Silsdorf placed 2nd in the category of Medicine and Health. She presented her research entitled New Occupational Therapy Methods for Improving the Daily Life of a Child effected by Sensory Processing Disorder. Also, Siobhan Cosgrave placed 3rd in the category of Behavioral Science. She presented her research entitled The Rate of Working Memory Development in Children with Down Syndrome in Comparison to their Mainstream Peers.
Kayla Medina (sophomore) and Gretta Silsdorf (sophomore) have been named the recipients of the New York Institute of Technology - Life Science Mini Research Grant Award.
Siobhan Cosgrave (sophomore), Isabel Leslie (sophomore), Kayla Medina (sophomore), Akiah Watts (junior) have been accepted into the 1000 Girls, 1000 Futures program, which is presented by the Global STEM Alliance of the New York Academy of Sciences. As part of the program, our students receive one-on-one mentoring from professional women in STEM fields, network with female STEM enthusiasts and professionals and complete coursework that emphasizes college readiness, leadership, communication and critical thinking skills.
